Summer Fair Assistant- North Iowa Fair

Objective: This position provides assistance to the 4-H Youth Development staff of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (ISUEO) in Cerro Gordo County. The position will support the County Youth Coordinator (CYC) Education Specialist and the Cerro Gordo County Extension Staff.

Responsibilities

• Work independently and with a team to assist with pre-county fair activities and setup including fair entry process and preparation using FairEntry.com and 4-H Online2.0. 

• Assist with duties prior to, during, and following the North Iowa Fair; responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, weigh-in of all species of livestock, stalling of animals, documenting livestock shows, and fair book interpretation. 

• Assist with static and clothing, food, and communications events. 

• Assist with pre-fair and post-fair documentation and reporting. 

• Collaborate with staff to communicate program impacts, primarily through social media. 

• Maintain a close working relationship with the County Youth Coordinator and Cerro Gordo County Extension Staff, and keep all staff updated on programming. 

• Demonstrate professionalism as an ISU Extension and Outreach professional through image, public relations, and networking. 

• Assist with preparation of displays and documentation for the Iowa State Fair. 

• Commit to serve the entire duration of the position: up to 300 hours beginning no later than May 1st, 2026.

• Remote work will be available for a limited number of hours per week from January through April.

Qualifications

• Applicants may include current college students (freshman through senior), recent graduates, high school seniors, or individuals of any age with relevant experience or interest in Extension-related disciplines. These disciplines may include agriculture and natural resources, youth development, community and economic development, health and human sciences, and other areas aligned with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s mission to engage Iowans through research-based education and community service.

• Strong organizational skills. 

• 4-H background is preferred but not required. 

• Must be available to work July  27-August 2, 2026.

• Strong written and oral communication and customer relation skills. 

• Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite Products, Internet, social media, and e-mail applications. 

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (mileage reimbursement is available). 

• Ability to pass background screening to meet the Child Protection and Safety Policy.

Additional Information

The work schedule is 40 hours/week starting no later than June 1st, 2026, with a per-hour pay rate starting at $15.00/hour. The total maximum hours are 300 hours. Flexible hours are required, and may include some evening, weekend, and overnight work.

Supervisor: County Director with day-to-day supervision by the program coordinators.
