Economic Vitality Specialist
Main Street Mason City is seeking a motivated and community-minded Economic Vitality Specialist to support the economic growth and revitalization of our historic downtown district. This part-time position plays a vital role in fostering a vibrant, prosperous, and sustainable local economy by supporting existing businesses, attracting new investment, and cultivating a dynamic downtown experience for residents and visitors alike.
The Economic Vitality Specialist will perform a variety of administrative, technical, and professional duties while assisting in the enhancement, promotion, and preservation of Downtown Mason City.
Key Responsibilities:
- Organization & Program Support: Support the Program Manager, Board of Directors, committees, and volunteers with the implementation of the annual work plan and program activities including but not limited to fundraising, marketing and communications, and special projects.
- Develop & Implement Economic Strategies: Identify market trends, economic opportunities, and implement strategies to strengthen and grow the downtown business environment.
- Business Support & Retention: Serve as a resource for local business owners by offering technical assistance and connection to support and resources including marketing, finance, operations, and expansion efforts.
- Promote Economic Activity: Collaborate on events and activities that increase foot traffic, enhance the downtown experience, and promote a strong sense of place.
- Build & Strengthen Partnerships: Work with local stakeholders, property owners, community development partners, and civic leaders to advance shared development and revitalization goals.
- Track & Monitor District Health: Collect and analyze data to assess business performance, building improvements, job creation, and overall economic progress.
- Utilize the Main Street Four-Point Approach: Contribute to revitalization efforts through the lens of the Main Street Approach: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.
- Engage Community Needs: Ensure all efforts are inclusive, equitable, and aligned with the aspirations and needs of the broader Mason City community.
Examples of Duties:
- Conduct market analyses and business surveys to identify gaps and opportunities
- Support façade and building improvement efforts in partnership with property owners
- Assist in planning and promoting special events and campaigns to drive local spending
- Coordinate technical assistance workshops or resources for business owners and entrepreneurs
- Facilitate business roundtables, focus groups, or one-on-one visits to gather insights
- Maintain records and prepare reports on district metrics and revitalization progress
- Interest or experience in economic development, downtown revitalization, community planning, or a related field
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
- Familiarity with the Main Street Approach is a plus
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Google Workspace, or data collection tools is beneficial
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
- Work is performed primarily indoors in an office setting.
- Work outdoors occasionally for special events.
- Frequent use of computers, office equipment, telephone, and any other pertinent supplies, space or equipment used to perform duties of this position.
- Sit for long periods of time.
- Stand or walk for long periods of time during events.
- Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Available to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends.
- Travel occasionally for events, meetings, etc.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, and access to consistent transportation is required.

Position Title: Economic Vitality Specialist
Reports to: Program Manager
Employment Type: Part-Time (20–25 hours/week; maximum 50 hours per pay period)
Wage Range: $18.25–$21.50 per hour, based on experience
Review Period: Performance and wage reviewed after six months; reviewed annually thereafter at the start of the fiscal year
Schedule: Year-round position; some nights and weekends required
