Building CommUNITY: Welcoming Micronesians to North Iowa
As part of the Chamber’s Building CommUNITY initiative, we invite you to join us for an informative and engaging session on the growing Micronesian population in North Iowa from 9-10AM on December 5. This workshop aims to equip businesses and community members with the knowledge and tools to better support new residents and foster a more inclusive environment.
In this one-hour session led by Esdaka Soukon, a Community Liaison with Mason City Schools, you will gain insights into:
- The Micronesian community in North Iowa: Numbers and Needs
- Cultural Overview: A look into the history, traditions, and values of the Pohnpeian people, including food, holidays, and other cultural practices.
- Connecting with the Community: Insights from a local representative on how Micronesian families are engaging with schools and the broader community.
- Overcoming Barriers: Discussion on the challenges faced by these families and how we can support them during their transition.
