Dr. Martie Geiger-Ho has been developing her Shangri-La series for several years when she discovered a way to incorporate antique Chinese pottery shards collected over more than a decade of beachcombing into her sculptural work. This vision took shape in a series of ceramic sculptures that physically integrated the shards into seascape-inspired forms, making the work self-referential. By combining the terrain of the South China Sea coast with actual earthenware, porcelain, and stoneware fragments recovered from its shores, Geiger-Ho created pieces that both honor China’s long and distinguished ceramic tradition and playfully comment on how “china” itself can be transformed into new “china.”
