Breaking Glass featuring Kaylee Ciavarelli and Mary Ingham will be from 8:30-10AM on Thursday, July 21.
Kaylee Ciavarelli is a mother of five, from Mason City, Iowa. Kaylee has two small businesses, and runs two non-profits, Dola Dolls to Love Through Dementia and Love’s Law, to help those in her community and nationwide. She loves her community and gives a helping hand whenever she can.
She is an advocate for domestic abuse and unborn victims of violence. Speaking as often as she can, Kaylee wants to normalize the conversation. She believes in bringing out a victim's truth, showing confidence in the peace of releasing the hold abusers have and how they try to silence their victims. Currently, Kaylee is working on passing a law in the state of Iowa with hopes of making it a nationwide law that makes assaulting a knowingly pregnant woman a Class D Felony. Kaylee is a woman who thrives in the face of trauma.
As an advocate Kaylee has four goals:
1) Raise awareness in Iowa’s current laws, that don’t protect women, their children, and the unborn.
2) Start a women's group that strengthens confidence and releases guilt. That shares healthy boundaries and how to reconnect with yourself and children emotionally after becoming a survivor of abuse.
3) Connect with Iowa schools during sex education courses to share the importance of adding education on healthy relationships, how to leave an abusive relationship, and self-defense.
4) Write a book that gives hope to young adults about not just surviving but thriving!
Mary J. Ingham has 32 years of experience in working with trauma survivors and social change. She is responsible for supervision and oversight of an organization providing comprehensive domestic violence, sexual assault and survivors of homicide services. The program serves a total of 23 counties, encompassing 13,135 square miles with a total population of 456,659. The organization has a staff of 28 advocates and prevention specialists.
This popular series offers a unique learning experience to assist participants in stretching their leadership potential and have a greater impact within their organizations. Past speakers include U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Christensen, University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson, ISU President Dr. Wendy Wintersteen, and more.
