SUMMARY:Breaking Glass featuring Dr. Hayley Harvey
DESCRIPTION:September's Breaking Glass session will feature Dr. Hayley Harvey\n\n \n\nHayley Harvey was 7 years old when her mom came home one day in a taxi\, climbed the stairs up to the family's Detroit apartment and\, without saying a word\, went to her bedroom to lie down something she never did in the middle of the day. "Your mom had all her teeth out today\," Harvey's dad told her. That unnerving experience sparked an interest and the courage for Harvey to ask a local female dentist if she could observe a dental procedure when she was a senior in high school\, and that helped put her on a path to a career in dentistry. \n\n\n\nHarvey attended the University of Iowa and discovered a passion for improving oral health and access to care for at-risk and rural populations. After earning two degrees from Iowa\, Harvey who served for a decade in the Army National Guard practiced dentistry in Michigan.\n\n \n\nShe later returned to Iowa as the public health dental director for the Iowa Department of Public Health\, which then led her to a position at Broadlawns Medical Center. Harvey has helped Broadlawns establish a new $24 million facility with 22 operatories six of which are for extramural rotations of University of Iowa dental students. Through her work at Broadlawns\, she ensures that future generations of dentists will have a solid understanding of the dental and health disparities facing Iowa's low-income populations.\n\n\n\nHarvey is active in many community organizations and serves on the Advisory Committee for the Oral Health Iowa Coalition\, the Mid-Iowa Health Foundation and Children and Families of Iowa Board of Directors\, and the University of Iowa Alumnae Leadership Council. Harvey maintains professional memberships with the American Dental Association\, The Pierre Fauchard Academy\, The America Public Health Association\, The Academy of General Dentistry\, The American College of Dentists\, and The International College of Dentists. In 2019\, Harvey was awarded the University of Iowa Dental Alumni Service Recognition of the Year honor and the 2020\, University of Iowa Distinguished Alumni Service Award. \n\n \n\nThe Breaking Glass Leadership Series offers a unique learning experience to assist participants in stretching their leadership potential and have a greater impact within their organizations. Tickets are $10 each for employees of Chamber member businesses and $20 for nonmembers. Register online at masoncityia.com or contact Noah Harris (nharris@masoncityia.com) at the Chamber for more information.
