Campaign & Marketing Director

Position Summary: Cultivates and expands relationships with donors and businesses. Responsible for annual fundraising, donor engagement and marketing efforts for the United Way of North Central Iowa. Oversees the design and update of the website, social media and electronic communications. Works with CEO to develop and analyze the resource development & communication plan.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:

Fundraising/Campaign/Resource Development

  • Develop campaign materials (brochures, pledge cards, posters, CEO booklets, etc.) Maintain inventory of campaign and marketing materials, and place orders as needed
  • Recruit and track businesses promoting annual campaign
  • Provide leadership for and assist in the development and execution of campaign fundraising goals, objectives and strategies
  • Recruitment, training and management of campaign volunteers
  • Schedule, prepare agendas and attend meetings with campaign volunteers, community leaders and prospective givers as needed
  • Lead campaign volunteers in conducting the annual campaign and work directly with Campaign Chair
  • Analyze campaign data and recommend strategies
  • Prepare and monitor the budget for the annual campaign
  • Develop and implement annual and long-range plans to maximize the success of annual fundraising
  • Provide campaign updates to finance committee and to Campaign Chair for board meetings
  • Record visits, donor communication and business contacts in eTapestry (United Way’s CRM)
  • Pull reports as needed in regards to campaign, donors and businesses using eTapestry

Donor Engagement

  • Develop relationships and establish partnerships with community leaders and businesses
  • Research, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective givers
  • Speak about United Way of North Central Iowa’s annual campaign at service clubs and community meetings


  • Oversee the implementation of UWNCI visual identity formats
  • Utilize United Way Worldwide branding and marketing support when appropriate
  • Assess and implement campaign and year-round marketing plans
  • Update and maintain website and social media
  • Assess and implement plan for feature articles, letters to the editor, press releases, newsletters

Event Management

  • Form volunteer event committees as needed and engage them on event planning and implementation
  • Coordinate agendas, meetings and minutes with event committee chairs
  • Plan and implement events (Campaign Kick-Off, Campaign Celebration, and other events as assigned)
  • Work with the Community Impact Director implementing Day of Caring by engaging business contacts in the volunteer opportunities
  • Assist in the Day of Action by providing public relations and marketing support.


  • Serve as back-up for answering phone and receiving visitors
  • Facilitate and take minutes at applicable meetings
  • Attend Board of Directors meetings and committee meetings as assigned by CEO
  • Represent UWNCI on community committees and at community functions as assigned
  • Understand, believe and advocate the UWNCI vision and mission in our region
  • Seek out and participate in appropriate professional development opportunities
  • Work with CEO on special projects and other responsibilities as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment, with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to meet goals and deadlines; process oriented;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Applications, Adobe design programs and ability to learn donor CRM software.

Physical Factors/Working conditions:

  • Indoor office environment; regional travel (no overnight) to companies, donors & campaign presentations
  • Participation in early morning, evening, and weekend meetings and events required as needed
  • Regular use of personal vehicle;
  • Light lifting of supplies;
  • Occasional non-regular hours


Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and/or 3-5 years of successful experience in fundraising, communications, marketing, and event planning. Knowledge of: design programs (Photoshop, InDesign); email marketing (Constant Contact); and web hosting software & social media platforms. Ability to make timely decisions and operate effectively under pressure. Demonstrates excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills. Possess skills to make large and small group presentations. Must be able to communicate effectively with community organizations, co-workers, volunteers, donors, agencies and the general public.
